The Alternative Newspaper Network is made up of a diverse group of 126 weekly and monthly publications. They are free-circulation papers that are distributed in all of the major metropolitan areas of North America.

Each publication has a unique, local identity that sets it apart from the mainstream press in its market.

Readers of Alternative newspapers and magazines tend generally to be young, independent, and active. According to a study conducted in Spring 2004 by NOP World [Roper], roughly 56% of alternative newsweekly readers are Influentials --meaning they recommend to others where to shop and dine, how to vote, and, most importantly, how to spend their discretionary time and income.

Influentials consume and recommend cultural activities (film, music, books, travel, live music, theater and fine art) at a far higher rate than the general public.
